Mikas Tennis Academy – High-Performance Program FAQ
PLAYER SELECTION & GROUPING
What are the new High Performance levels?
• Level 1: 2-hour sessions for players building competitive skills.
• Level 2: 3-hour sessions for elite players seeking advanced development.
Why extend Level 2 sessions to 3 hours?
To allow time for thorough skill development, tactical training, physical conditioning, and mental coaching—all essential for serious competitors.
How do I know which level is right for my player?
Coach Mika evaluates each player to recommend the appropriate level based on skill, commitment, and goals.
Is the High Performance program suitable for beginners?
No. The program is designed for advanced juniors actively competing in tournaments.
Why is my child playing with these kids instead of others?
We carefully group players based on their skill level, playing style, commitment, and work ethic—not just age or ranking. Training with the right mix of players ensures maximum improvement.
My child is better than another player in the group. Why are they in the same group?
We group players not only by skill but also to create a balanced and challenging environment that reflects real tournament conditions. Players encounter opponents both “stronger” and “weaker”,
which helps build resilience and adaptability. It’s also important to note that it’s not advisable—or fair—for a player to always “play down” or always “play up.” If one player is always playing down, that means another is always playing up. Our grouping aims to strike the right balance so every player can develop by facing a variety of challenges.
Can I request a change in my child's training group?
We make adjustments only when necessary to ensure every player is challenged appropriately. However, any changes must be approved by Mika based on evaluations.
How often do you reassess player groupings?
We continuously assess players, but formal reviews happen every 4-6 weeks. If a player consistently outperforms their group and meets our criteria, we may consider moving them.
TRAINING STRUCTURE & EXPECTATIONS
What if my child can’t make it to practice?
We require at least 48 hours' notice for any absences. If space is available, we offer makeup classes, but we do not guarantee them.
What happens if my child arrives late?
High-performance training requires discipline. Late arrivals disrupt the class, so we encourage players to be on time. If they are late, they must do their warm-up separately before joining.
Why do we have to prepay for classes?
Prepayment ensures commitment and helps us maintain small class sizes. This also prevents last-minute dropouts, allowing us to plan the best training environment for all players.
Can we switch training days?
Participation days must be approved in advance. If a spot is available on another day, we may accommodate a switch, but this is not guaranteed.
Why is my child being asked to do fitness training instead of hitting more?
Tennis is more than just hitting the ball. Strength, speed, and endurance are critical for success at a high level. Our program is designed to develop complete athletes.
COMPETITION & TOURNAMENTS
Does my child have to play tournaments?
Yes, tournaments are essential for high-performance players. They provide real match experience, help assess progress, and prepare players for competitive tennis.
How do I know which tournaments my child should enter?
We can provide guidance on tournament selection based on your child’s level and goals. Speak with Mika or the coaches for recommendations.
My child lost in a tournament. Should we change their training?
Losing is part of the learning process. Instead of making drastic changes, we analyze matches to identify areas for improvement and adjust training accordingly.
COST & COMMITMENT
Why is high-performance training more expensive than regular classes?
High-performance training includes specialized coaching, more intensive drills, and fitness training. The cost reflects the level of detail and dedication we provide to each player.
Can we take a break and return later?
Players who take extended breaks risk losing their spot in the program. If they wish to return, they may need to be re-evaluated to ensure they are still at the appropriate level.
What if my child wants to quit mid-session?
We encourage players to complete their committed training sessions. No refunds are given once a session has started, as our program is designed for consistent development.
PARENT INVOLVEMENT
Can I watch my child’s training?
Parents are welcome to observe from a distance, but we ask that they do not interfere with coaching or provide instructions during practice.
Can I talk to the coach after practice?
If you have questions or concerns, please schedule a time to speak with Mika or the coaches. We want to ensure the best experience for both players and parents.
How can I support my child’s development at home?
Encourage them to stay active, eat well, practice mental focus, and reinforce positive attitudes about competition and improvement.
